Eligibility for External Membership
The Public Body of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) was established in 1994 with the Act XL of 1994 on the MTA becoming into effect. From 2000 onwards, scientists and researchers living and/or working outside Hungary can also apply for membership in the public body.
External Membership of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Public Body
The Public Body of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) was established in 1994 with the Act XL of 1994 on the MTA becoming into effect. From 2000 onwards, scientists and researchers living and/or working outside Hungary can also apply for membership in the public body. An external member of the public body can be a researcher who lives abroad and conducts scientific activities abroad, who holds a scientific (at least PhD equivalent) recognized in their home country and/or in Hungary, who engages in their scientific field creatively, identifies themselves as Hungarian or partially Hungarian, and maintains connections with the Hungarian scientific community.
Eligibility for External Membership:
- The external membership is open to researchers who live abroad and conduct scientific activities abroad.
- Applicants must have a scientific degree recognized in their home country and/or in Hungary.
- They must be actively engaged in their scientific field.
- They must identify themselves as Hungarian or partially Hungarian.
- They must maintain a connection with the Hungarian scientific community.
Applicants for external membership of the MTA Public Body can request their admission through the Academy's data repository (Academy database) at https://aat.mta.hu/aat/Registration/ExternalPublicBody.
Complete the electronic application form and print it using the „Registration” button. Sign the printed admission statement and send it along with a copy of the document proving your scientific degree to the following address: Secretariat of Hungarians Abroad, MTA, 1051 Budapest, Nádor utca 7. Evaluation and Certification:
Applications are evaluated by the Presidential Committee for Hungarian Science Abroad.
The MTA recognizes external membership with a personalized certificate signed by the president of MTA, issued and sent twice a year following the regular General Assembly in May and during the Hungarian Science Festival in November.
Benefits for External Members:
- Gain "Hungarian scientific citizenship".
- Receive monthly updates about the Hungarian scientific community abroad through the electronic newsletter of the Presidential Committee for Hungarian Science Abroad.
- Access the Academic Database, which includes information about all full, corresponding, external, and honorary members of the MTA, as well as Hungarian and external public body members.
- Participate in the work of the scientific sections of the MTA.
- They can apply for the Domus Senior Scholarship, which supports research work in Hungary and in the applicants' home countries. Within the framework of the Domus Hungarica Scientiarum et Artium Scholarship Program in Hungary, individuals without a junior scientific degree and senior professionals can conduct research and work at Hungarian universities, research institutes, and archives. Additionally, support can be requested for participation in conferences in Hungary. Under the so-called home country application, individuals living in the Carpathian Basin can receive support for their research work conducted in their place of residence.
