The Academy raises funds to assist the social support programme of a college in Transcarpathia

In view of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the goal of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ 2023 charity fundraising campaign is to assist the social support programme of the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College. In line with its fundraising efforts of 2022, the Academy would again like to express its solidarity with those most directly affected by the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Donors can contribute to the social support programme of the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College by responding to the charity appeal announced at the 196th General Assembly of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Each year, the Academy, by decision of its 186th General Assembly, creates an opportunity for academics and members of the public body to donate a portion of their income to a charitable objective. This objective is always set by the General Assembly for the period up to the next ordinary General Assembly.

In accordance with last year’s General Assembly resolution, the objective of the 2022 academic charity fundraiser was to ensure the safety, well-being and livelihood of scientists, the Academy’s public-body members and their families displaced by the war in Ukraine, and to preserve the cultural and artistic heritage of Transcarpathian Hungarians. In response to the call of the 195th General Assembly of the Academy, by 21 April 2023 a total of

HUF 34,369,186 in donations had been raised.

On our behalf as well as on that of the recipients, we would like to thank you for your generous donations.

The use of the funds is coordinated by the Secretariat for Hungarians Beyond the Border, which is part of the Public-body Directorate of the Secretariat of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in close co-operation with the Hungarian scientific institutes of Transcarpathia. Thanks to their work and to the generosity of the donors, relief for refugees – providing them with hot meals, accommodation, emergency aid and medical care – began from the very first days of the war.

Given that experts believe the war will sadly continue for quite some time,

the aim of the 2023 charity fundraiser of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences is to contribute to the social support programme of the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College.

Since 24 February 2022, almost 700,000 internally displaced persons have arrived in Transcarpathia, a region of 1.2 million inhabitants, and many thousands of the locals have moved abroad, with their relatives and dependents left behind without support. Thousands have also been conscripted into the army. Immediately after the outbreak of the war, the Ferenc Rákóczi Ferenc II Transcarpathian Hungarian College offered its support to higher education institutions and research institutes in the war-torn region, and joined the initiative of the Association of Higher Education Institutions of Ukraine to support the education and housing of young people arriving from the temporarily occupied territories.

The social support programme of the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College is intended to help them, and now the Hungarian Academy of Sciences wishes to contribute to this through its charity appeal.
