The Frederic Esser Nemmers Prize in Mathematics is one of the most significant international prizes in mathematics. Since 1994, it is awarded biennially by the Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois, USA) through the Nemmers Brothers Foundation. (The Nemmers Prizes also include the Erwin Plein Nemmers Prize in Economics, the Michael Ludwig Nemmers Prize in Music Composition and the Mechthild Esser Nemmers Prize in Medical Science.)
The prize comes with the highest sum of money awarded in mathematics in the United States and is currently 200 000 dollars. The 2016 prize was awarded to János Kollár, External Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for his fundamental contributions to algebraic geometry, including the minimal model program and its applications, the theory of rational connectedness and the study of real algebraic varieties. Scholars awarded include Mikhail Gromov (Honorary Member of the MTA, winner of the Abel Prize and Bolyai Prize) Jakov G. Szinaj (Honorary Member of the MTA, winner of the Abel Prize), Jurij I. Manyin (winner of the Bolyai Prize) and three researchers who have received the Fields Medal as well: Edward Witten, Simon Donaldson and Terence Tao.
