Information on the Academy’s measures designed to help scientists fleeing Ukraine

The Hungarian Academy of Sciences (“MTA”) condemns all forms of war of aggression and follows with profound sympathy the wholly unwarranted suffering and destruction caused by the Russian attack on Ukraine. The MTA has launched a programme to help members of the public body of the Academy, scientists as well as staff members of Transcarpathian scientific, higher education, cultural and artistic institutions and organisations who flee from Ukraine to Hungary as a result of the war. In this document we describe in detail the options available for providing or receiving help.

2022. március 11.

The MTA expresses its agreement with and support for the initiatives of Hungarian and other national and international organisations to help refugees escaping from war, including children, families torn apart and representatives of science and culture. At the same time, the courageous and determined action being taken by Russian scientists and scientific journalists alike to end the war has filled us with hope and respect.

We are convinced that there is no acceptable alternative to an immediate cessation of fighting. It is the only way to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe and to ensure the survival of Ukraine’s educational, cultural, scientific and religious institutions. We express our hope that the scientists and artists of Ukraine, including representatives of the Hungarian community, will, upon returning to their homeland after the war, be able to serve universal human scientific goals and cultivate their own traditions in peace and dignified conditions, while preserving their national identity.

The Hungarian Academy of Sciences feels a special responsibility towards Ukrainian scientists, members of the public body of the Academy, university and college lecturers, researchers, students and their families – including those in Transcarpathia – as well as towards all Hungarians living in Ukraine, and therefore it wishes to provide all support within its means to those who turn to the Academy for help, regardless of their nationality.
