Farewell lecture by Professor Sierd Cloetingh, outgoing president of Academia Europaea, at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest
An eminent European Earth scientist’s talk on Europe as a “Natural Laboratory for Frontier Research in Earth Sciences”
President of Academia Europaea (AE) from 2014 to 2020, Professor Sierd Cloetingh has recently handed over the presidency to Professor Marja Makarow.
To mark the end of his presidential term at AE, he had chosen the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for his valedictory presidential lecture, which took place in hybrid format – with physically present audience and live streaming – on 10 December 2021 at MTA’s Headquarters.
At the beginning of the event, MTA President Prof. Tamás Freund gave an opening address, in which he highlighted Professor Cloetingh’s achievements and expressed the hope that the excellent collaboration between Academia Europaea and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences would be pursued during the term of AE’s new President, Professor Marja Makarow.
Professor Cloetingh’s lecture, bearing the title "Europe: Natural Laboratory for Frontier Research in Earth Sciences", was an outline of his scientific career in the Earth sciences and his contribution to European science policy. More information and an abstract of the lecture can be found here.
