Announcement on the Nominees for the Chief Officer Posts of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
The new leadership of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences will be elected by its General Assembly on 9 May 2023. The preparations for the election of the Academy leadership due in 2023 have been completed by the 22-member Nomination Committee, composed of members delegated by the eleven scientific sections, who are either members of the Academy or non-member representatives delegated to the General Assembly, in line with the provisions of the Academy’s Statutes as well as the Committee’s own Rules of Procedure.
At its meeting of 22 March 2023, the Nomination Committee closed the nomination process and approved the documentation and lists of nominees to be distributed to the General Assembly participants who were to elect the new leadership. The General Assembly participants, both members of the Academy and non-member representatives delegated to the General Assembly, received the Nominating Committee’s briefing letter on 27 March 2023.
At its meeting on 1 March 2023, the Nomination Committee reviewed and discussed the respective programme proposals of the President, the Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretary-General and established the official list of nominees for the Academy’s elected chief officer posts after a vote was held by secret ballot for each of the nominees. Based on the decision of the Nomination Committee, the official list of nominees for the chief officer posts of the Academy is available to the entire MTA public body community as well as the general public.

At its meeting of 22 March 2023, the Nomination Committee decided to distribute the respective programme proposals of the candidates for the three elected chief officer posts to the participants of the General Assembly with the right to vote, and the Committee authorised the publication of the programme proposals of the candidates – for the respective posts of President, Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General – on the MTA website after obtaining their prior consent.
The next President, Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General, Vice Presidents, as well as the three elected academic members of the Presidium will be elected by the General Assembly on 9 May 2023, for a term of three years. Their mandate will take full effect on the first day of the month following their election by the General Assembly, which will also be the date they take office.
In addition to the arrangements for the renewal of the mandates for the chief officers in 2023, the Nomination Committee has also made the necessary preparations for the election of the members of the special committees of the General Assembly. The mandate will end this year for the full and alternate members of the Doctoral Council, the Book and Journal Publishing Committee, the Research Ethics Committee, the Supervisory Board and the Asset Management Committee. The Nomination Committee has the right to put forward proposals for the nomination of full and alternate members of the Doctoral Council, the Book and Journal Publishing Committee and the Research Ethics Committee; the decision on the nominations are to be made by the relevant scientific sections. The Nominating Committee has the right to nominate full and alternate members to the Supervisory Board and the Asset Management Committee and to nominate the chair of the Book and Journal Publishing Committee.
