Boundless history: 1840 – The first issue of Magyar Academiai Értesítő, the official gazette of the Hungarian Learned Society, is published

In the first half of the 19th century, the development of the organisational and institutional framework of Hungarian scholarship proceeded in parallel with the emergence of forums for scholarly communication. Among the objectives of the Hungarian Learned Society (Magyar Tudós Társaság) – later the Hungarian Academy of Sciences – was the creation of a scholarly periodical that would both document the Academy’s work and disseminate the results of the scientific community. This resulted in the launch of Magyar Academiai Értesítő as the Academy’s official gazette in 1840.

Hungarian-language scholarly publishing began to develop in the early 19th century alongside Latin- and German-language periodicals. Tudományos Gyűjtemény (Scientific Collection, 1817–1841) was the first significant publication to promote the organisation of Hungarian scholarly life. In 1834, the Hungarian Learned Society launched Tudománytár (Library of Science), a journal devoted to the popularisation and critical discussion of scholarship, edited by Ferenc Toldy (Schedel). This journal served as a model for the publications of later learned societies. As Tudománytár was aimed at a broader audience, however, the Academy deemed it necessary to have a journal dedicated to news and announcements related to the institution’s internal activities. This led to the creation of Magyar Academiai Értesítő.

Edited by Ferenc Toldy, the new periodical was intended primarily to publish papers presented at Academy’s meetings, Academy resolutions and calls for proposals. It regularly published the minutes of plenary and sectional meetings, the results of Academy member elections, and announcements of scholarly competitions and summaries of the award-winning works.

Publication of Értesítő was not continuous during its first decade. Publication was suspended in 1844, and then it appeared as a column in the newspaper Társalkodó starting in 1847; its publication was interrupted once again due to the events of the 1848–1849 Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence. Following several periods of suspension, publication became continuous from the mid-1850s onwards.

In the 1860s, as the Academy gained greater freedom to operate, the structure and content of Értesítő expanded. From 1860, in accordance with the Academy’s sectional structure at the time, it was divided into three separate sections: mathematics and natural sciences; philosophy, law and history; and linguistic and aesthetics. In 1867, the journal was renamed Bulletin of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Magyar Tudományos Akadémia Értesítője), while retaining the thematic structure established in the preceding period. This format remained in place until 1899. Publication of the journal also became more regular. The journal’s editor from 1867 to 1869 was the natural scientist Jácint Rónay, a corresponding member of the Academy (1867–1869). He was succeeded by János Arany, Secretary General of the Academy, from 1870 to 1877, and then by Secretary General Vilmos Fraknói from 1878 to 1889.

In addition to announcements related to the Academy’s operations (such as summaries of general assemblies), Értesítő also published excerpts from scientific treatises, book reviews, evaluations of prize competition submissions, and news from foreign academies. From the 1870s onwards, it played an increasingly important role in publishing the results of rapidly expanding scientific research.

Értesítő operated under this title until 1955; thereafter, from 1956, it was published under the name Magyar Tudomány, which remains the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ scholarly journal to this day. From 1952 the Academy’s official gazette became Akadémiai Közlöny (Academy Gazette) which reverted to the title Akadémiai Értesítő in 1991.
