What should we protect and where? Critical fresh water drainage basins in Europe

Approximately half of the drainage basins or catchment areas in Europe harbour at least one endangered or limited range species as well as various indigenous species. This is one of the most important findings made by the research programme tasked with providing basic information regarding the protection of fresh water ecosystems.

The study, conducted with the participation of the MTA Centre for Ecological Research, shows that the Balkans and Eastern Europe are most vulnerable when it comes to the protection of critical catchment areas.
