It is the first time that ALLEA (All European Academies), which is a union of all European scientific academies and the AE (Academia Europaea), which functions as the European Academy of Science, have organised a joint conference and general assembly. They chose the location at the behest of Hungarian Academy president, László Lovász.

The main topic of the conference will be the future of Europe and its sustainability in development and adaptability in vital fields such as cultural heritage, social systems, healthcare, the economy, climate and science.

The initiative has also been joined by many European organisations such as the Young Academy of Europe (YAE), the European Research Council (ERC), and SAPEA, a European academic consortium supporting the European Commission’s scientific advisory board (SAM). Consequently, the conference, which will take place between 3-6 September, will be attended by approximately 300 high ranking European scientists and decision makers including academy presidents and vice presidents.

The official program will kick off with the opening ceremony on Monday afternoon followed by two award ceremonies, the Academia Europaea Gold Medal (awarded to: Helga Nowotny, former president of the ERC) and the ALLEA Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values (awarded to Koen Lenaerts, president of the European Court of Justice). Tuesday and Wednesday will feature panel discussions and lectures as well as the Kondorosi and Erasmus awards, followed by the lectures of the awardees: Allan Downie, plant biologist and Andreu Mas-Colell economist respectively.
