Call for application for the position of Academic Director
of the Academia Europaea Budapest Hub

The Budapest Knowledge Hub of Academia Europaea (the Academy of Europe) is announcing a call for applications for the position of Academic Director.

Based on a collaboration agreement between Academia Europaea and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Budapest Hub is hosted by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), with its administration located at the Secretariat of MTA in Budapest. Aiming to promote interdisciplinary scientific discourse with a regional and European focus, the Budapest Hub started its operation on 1 January 2021. In fulfilling its mission, it relies both on the community of AE members and the public association of the MTA, including members of MTA’s recently established young academy. It is strongly committed to co-operate with the network of AE Hubs across Europe, while maintaining close collaboration with the Young Academy of Europe as well. Its activities are organized around four so-called thematic missions, each headed by a senior and a junior Co-Chair. Further details about the current goals and structure of the Hub can be found here: https://mta.hu/aebudapest.

The initial term of office of the new Academic Director will be 3 years, starting from 1st June 2024. The Academic Director can rely in the daily operation of the Hub on a Managing Director, a Hub officer and a Hub communications officer, each of them working part-time in these functions as employees of the Secretariat of MTA.

Eligible to apply for this position are all scientists and scholars who are Members of Academia Europaea, are based in Hungary and enjoy high esteem as prominent members of the Hungarian scientific community. The position does not come with any remuneration. The responsibilities of the Academic Director include overseeing the functioning of the AE Budapest Hub in general, coordinating work among the 4 thematic missions headed by two Co-Chairs each, and representing the Hub at the Annual General Meetings of Academia Europaea as well as at other events. The new Academic Director will be welcome to propose changes in the scope of the scientific fields covered by the Hub in the form of the 4 thematic missions.

Applications – of maximum 2 A4 pages – must be submitted in English. The application should include: the candidate’s vision regarding the future of the AE Budapest Hub; an outline of strategic plans, with particular emphasis on scientific collaboration with the neighbouring countries and countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Along with the application, candidates are required to attach a brief academic curriculum vitae, a list of major publications and a short summary of their relationship with the AE.

Applications as well as enquiries should be sent to the email address of the AE Budapest Hub: aebudapest [at] office [dot] mta [dot] hu.

The deadline for submitting applications is 31 January, 2024.

The applications will be reviewed by the AE Budapest Hub leadership, seeking advice from foreign Members of AE where necessary, and a decision on the selected candidate will be made by the leadership by 28 February 2024. The nomination of the selected candidate for the position of Academic Director will be forwarded to the Board of Academia Europaea for approval.
