Haiyan Hu
School of Aerospace Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology

The new century has witnessed a series of successes for China’s space missions, including landings on the Moon and Mars. In these space missions, deployable radar antennas structures have played an essential role in high-resolution imaging and telecommunications. The lecture begins with the recent deep space exploration missions. It then outlines some advances in the dynamics of deployable space structures, with an emphasis on the ground simulation of the nonlinear dynamics of coupled overall motion and the large deformation of these structures in deployment. Finally, the lecture addresses the ongoing work on the on-orbit assembly of large space structures.

Short Bio of Dr Haiyan Hu

Dr Haiyan Hu is Chair Professor of Mechanics at the Beijing Institute of Technology. He served as the President of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics from 2001 to 2007, President of the Beijing Institute of Technology from 2007 to 2017, and President of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from 2010 to 2014. He has been a Member of the Presidium of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2016.

Dr Hu has made recognised contributions to the nonlinear dynamics and control of aerospace systems, including the nonlinear vibration isolation of missile stabilisers, the delayed control of flexible structures, the active flutter suppression of aircraft structures and the deployment dynamics of space structures. For his contributions, he was elected a Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007, a Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in 2010, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Moscow State University, Russia, in 2015 and an Honorary Doctorate of Science by the University of Reading, United Kingdom in 2016.
