According to their press release, 173 new members were elected at the last meeting of The Council of the Academia Europaea (AE).

Based on the AE database, nine Hungarian researchers have been elected, all of whom pursue their research in Hungary.

Among the newly elected AE members are academicians Kálmán Győry and József Gyulai, five Doctors of the Academy – Tamás Bíró Sándor, Ferenc, Fisher, Judit Padisák, Beáta Sperlágh, Bálint Tóth –, and two research group leaders from the Biological Research Centre in Szeged: Balázs Papp and Csaba Pál.

The election procedure for new members of Academia Europaea is a multistage process and ultimately it is the Council who decides who receives the nomination.

Currently AE has around 4000 members, who are all citizens of European countries, regardless of their current residence. The 22 sections of Academia Europaea comprise all disciplines: natural sciences, life sciences, humanities and social sciences.

The main aims of the institution are to share and promote the results of European research with the public, to support interdisciplinary and international research projects and to draw public attention to the importance of scientific results.
